Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been using his experience to help New York Jets teammate Zach Wilson.
The veteran QB has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2023 NFL season with an Achilles injury, despite his belief he’ll return for the playoffs. Rodgers sustained the injury in just the fourth play of his debut for the Jets in the Monday Night Football game against the Buffalo Bills.
Rodgers underwent surgery on Wednesday and will spend the next few months on the sidelines in recovery. As a result, Wilson is expected to be handed the starting quarterback role at the MetLife Stadium.
Wilson was drafted with the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and was expected to be the franchise quarterback for the future in New Jersey. However, two underwhelming years led to the Jets trading for Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers in April.
During training camp, Wilson and Rodgers worked together and developed a good friendship as the duo prepared for the start of the season. The two quarterbacks were often complementary of each other when asked about the other during press conferences.
Following the injury to Rodgers, it seems that the veteran QB has been doing his best to help his teammate get ready for what lies ahead. A report on NFL.com has stated that Rodgers has been FaceTiming with Wilson in the days after his injury to stay in touch with his teammate.
As a result of the talks, it has been claimed that Wilson has a renewed sense of confidence after a difficult first two years in the NFL. Rodgers is said to have been chatting with Wilson to ensure that the quarterback is “up to speed” with what he needs to do over the course of the season.

Since the injury to Rodgers, there has been speculation over whether or not the Jets will move to sign a new quarterback. As well as Wilson, Tim Boyle is the only other QB on the Jets depth chart and that has led to rumours over a potential move.
However, the article goes on to claim that the Jets have not made any inquiries about signing an experienced quarterback to replace Rodgers. Instead, it’s stated that the Jets have full confidence that Wilson can be the QB that the team needs to have a successful season.
After Rodgers left the field against the Bills, Wilson stepped in and helped the team claim a 22-16 win in overtime. Wilson completed 14 of 21 passes for 140 total passing yards with one touchdown pass and one interception.
