butcher’s creek is a new first person horror game inspired by the creepy Rockstar game. Hunt series and 2005 Condemned: Criminal Origins. Hunt is known to be one of the most controversial video games of all timewhile Condemned it is often referred to as one of the best horror games of the Xbox 360 generation.
For those who are not familiar with these games, Hunt It’s a third-person stealth/horror game. where players commit grisly murders to create shocking snuff movies. The game came out at a time when violent video games were facing a lot of scrutiny and was even banned in some countries as a result. Condemned, for its part, is a first-person horror game focused on melee combat. Both games spawned direct sequels, but their respective franchises have been dormant for over a decade.
Fortunately for fans of horror games who are looking for something similar to Hunt either Condemned, DARKNESS Developer David Szymanski has announced butcher’s creek. Set in 1993, butcher’s creek is about a “troubled loner” who is lured to an abandoned cabin by “rumors of bona fide snuff videotapes” and then finds himself being hunted by “sadistic killers,” according to Steam’s description. The premise certainly calls Hunt to mind, while the game sounds a lot like Condemned.
No trailer has been released yet butcher’s creekbut the Steam page has confirmed that the game will be available sometime in 2024. The Steam page also lists some of the features of the game. horror game fans can wait once butcher’s creek launches next year, which features melee combat using hammers, axes, pipes, 2x4s, and box cutters, the ability to photograph murder scenes to regain health, explore “rotting farms, collapsing factories, and seedy strip clubs” in the Appalachian Forest, and experience “a unique aesthetic that blends the gritty look of found footage video shoots.”
butcher’s creek sounds like it has a lot of potential, and with both Hunt and Condemned It stayed untouched for so many years, it’s great to see a new game to fill the void. The fact that David Szymanski is doing it is a good sign that the game will live up to the hype. For those unfamiliar with his work, Szymanski created the critically acclaimed first-person shooter. DARKNESSand also created the well received underwater horror game Iron lung.
While horror fans wait butcher’s creek to launch in 2024, they can hopefully see their inspirations on modern platforms. Hunt has an HD version available on PS4It is also backwards compatible on Xbox. Condemned: Criminal Origins it is also backwards compatible with Xbox and can also be played through Steam.
